THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING PADLOCKS: WHÈN THE NIGHT COMES FOR YOU.

Innocent, a former workmate and IT professional, woke up in the middle of the night and noticed through the vents above his bedroom door that the corridor lights were on, yet he clearly remembered switching them off before going to bed.
When he opened his bedroom door and looked to the left side of the corridor, he saw that all the lights in the other rooms, the sitting room, kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and store, were also on.
He was certain he had turned them all off before sleeping, as he had been the last one awake, working late on his laptop. He then turned to the right side of the corridor and was shocked to see the back door wide open.
Through the open doorway, he could see tree shadows waving in the night accross the outer walls and the stars staring back at him in the dark sky. It suddenly struck him that something was terribly wrong, someone had broken into his home in the middle of the night.
He first went to close the back door, but to his surprise, both of the large padlocks that usually secured the heavy metallic door were missing, as well as the smaller padlock for the access hole.
He locked the door with the latch and proceeded to the sitting room to switch off the lights, only to discover that every electronic device and valuable item had been stolen, including his very large television set, a TV so big that it usually required two or more people to carry it.
He couldn't understand how the intruders had managed to remove it without waking him up. It was also possible, he thought, that they had come with a van to transport such large household items.
Interestingly, Innocent had a habit of hiding his laptop deep under the sofa before going to bed, just in case of a burglary. But when he checked under the sofa, his most prized business asset was gone. He then checked the other rooms, only to find that all the electronics and valuables there had also been taken.
Ronnie, an engineer, had a similar but even more terrifying experience. He was deep asleep when he was awakened by voices threatening to kill him if he made a sound. His wife woke up and screamed, but her screams were silenced with a blow from a hammer to the head. She lost consciousness immediately, was later hospitalized, and fortunately survived and recovered from the ordeal.
Ronnie had installed a surveillance camera outside his home, which had worked perfectly for five years without incident. However, when the camera later malfunctioned, he delayed repairing it, and that's exactly when the thieves struck.
As a result, he had no footage or clue as to how they gained access to his home and bedroom. He later found that all the padlocks on his gates and access doors were missing without a trace.
My friend Musa experienced something equally disturbing. The thieves came right up to his bed, shone bright torches in his face, and ordered him to stay silent and cover himself and his wife under the blanket.
He obeyed without hesitation. While under the covers, he could hear the sounds of valuables being dragged outside. After some time, the silence signaled that the thieves were gone. He later realized that they had been interrupted when his car alarm went off as they tried to open its doors.
The next morning, he found that all the padlocks on his gate and doors were missing, just like in the other cases. Musa has since installed cameras, sensors, and alarms around his home to prevent any future break-ins.
A few years ago, my neighbor's shop was also raided. The thieves made off with valuable merchandise, and, once again, the padlocks for the metallic shop doors disappeared.
Across all these incidents, and many others you may have heard of, one strange detail stands out: the padlocks are always missing. It remains a mystery how these locks are opened or removed, and perhaps that's why the thieves take them, to keep the mystery alive.
My observation is that most of these missing padlocks are the silver type, which might have a hidden flaw that makes them easy to compromise. If you know how this is done, please click the Share button below this blog to tell us, or click here to chat with me directly so that I can update this article and help solve the mystery.
Some believe that acid is poured into the padlocks to melt or loosen them, allowing entry, but that's still just a theory, and the mystery continues.
And this is where every property buyer should pay attention. When searching for your next home on the Real Estate Database (RED), Uganda's trusted platform for verified listings, don't just admire the architecture or the price tag.
Look deeper. Pay close attention to the security features of every property you view. Does the house have reinforced locks, CCTV cameras, alarm systems, or motion sensors? Does the gate have a security light or guard post?
